Summer in Sunny Worcestershire

As I half-watch the Olympics (table tennis on now, whatever that is) I am working my way through the backlog of images of doggie guests --- most taken by Marjorie.

I did have a try with my SCUBA gear in the outdoor pool (above). I was worried that my back problems, which cause me constant pain, would stop me from doing this. But as long as Marjorie (bless) gave me my tank, BCD, etc. when I was in the pool, it wasn't too bad. Here's a photo I took underwater (two versions). More will be posted to the online gallery at www.hmdp.net as they become available.

"Sleepy Bugs" in Doggie Eyes and Today's Post

I have been trying --- as usual --- to catch up on the backlog of images that Marjorie has taken of our doggie guests. I "process" all of these with Photoshop CS3. If a dog has a "sleepy bug" in his or her eye, I remove it with Photoshop. I also add catch lights to the eyes themselves, and do other enhancements. These photos are then posted in our online gallery at www.hmdp.net where owners can purchase the high-res file for a modest Stg 7.50.

As I was doing this, I thought of our persecution by the Council. It's never far from Marjorie's or my thoughts. I wondered:
  • How many kennels take any photographs of their doggie guests?
  • Of the ones that do (are there any?) how many do so in hi-res, with Canon professional equipment?
  • And then how many spend tons of time "processing" the images in Photoshop, taking the time and care to remove something as simple as "sleepy bugs?"
I've decided that I shouldn't really politicise a warm-and-fuzzy doggie blog, so I've purchased a new domain name: www.council-sucks.com I'm in the process of installing forum software there, to provide a place for folks (starting with me) to have the satisfaction of venting their frustration with inept Council bureaucrats. I know from experience that even if nobody reads the posting it is still cathartic to post it where someone might read it.

Don't get me wrong. I don't know about other Councils, so can't say that all Councils sucks. And I've lived in Worcestershire since 1986, and haven't really had many dealings with the Worcestershire County Council prior to this. But I definitely think they suck now!

Just as I was feeling depressed and angry, the day's post arrived. In it were copies of two questionnaires sent by our customers to Worcestershire Trading Standards.

Talk about cheering me up. One read:
The health and well being of our dog is, and remains, the most important concern for us when we leave him in the care of Lucies Farm. It goes without saying that we took a great deal of time researching possible kenneling facilities for him before we settled on Lucies Farm and of course that included not only a viewing but also a trial overnight stay.

We could not be more delighted with the facilities and service that Craig and Marjorie Walsh and their team of dedicated staff provide for both us and our dog. Over the three years that we have been their clients, we have never failed to be completely satisfied at all times. When we see the excitement on our dog's face as we arrive at Lucies Farm, his delighted reaction t being reunited with Marjorie and at times the reluctance he shows to get back i the car to return home --- it is moments like these that reassure us that he is being treated as one of their family.

Not only do we have photographs that Craig has taken of our dog displayed in our home and a signed copy of Marjorie's latest book on our shelves but we have, on numerous occasions, recommended Lucies Farm to complete strangers whilst out dog walking as well as to friends and family.

From the moment we first "visited" Lucies Farm on their impressive and friendly website through to when we collect our dog (complete with his complimentary homemade cookies for the journey home!) we are completely confident in the service we are paying for. And whenever we have missed our dog, whilst being overseas, we have been thrilled to have the facility to watch and listen not only to him, but also the staff who are with him via the 24 hour web-cam.

Lucies Farm is exactly what it says it is. It is a luxury dog hotel for owners who put the needs of their dog first very time. Which is exactly what Lucies Farm does and we are privileged to be one of their clients.
In their covering letter to Terry Blanchard, they say, " . . . my wife and I are very concerned that you appear to have details of our pedigree dog on your electronic database. Could you please confirm that you are legally allowed to hold such details without our consent (does the Data Protection Act not apply?) and that all data will be destroyed at the end of your investigation? You seem to have a large database of pedigree dogs and their addresses, which would be highly valuable information in the wrong hands, and given the recent spate of central government loss of databases on CD's and laptops, this concerns me deeply."

Our position, confirmed by our barrister's opinion, is that the Council acted illegally when they stole this information from our password-protected computer and database.

The second letter to Ms. Blanchard that arrived today said:
I wish to make the following observations with regard to your letter. My immediate reaction was disbelief that Craig and Marjorie Walsh would be subjected to investigation by trading standards. I first used their services two years ago, at short notice, because the putative kennel I had chosen for my dog was not acceptable. I could not have made a better choice and was delighted with the care and attention that they could offer. The same high standard has applied during his subsequent stays. The question about the fee is puzzling because this information is openly available on the Lucies website. Craig Walsh also discussed the costs under the FAQ heading and his frankness is illuminating and refreshing.
The author of the first letter made a new booking today using our online system --- the one we supposedly don't have. In the comments section they said, "Ooooh. He'd love to stay in the cave."

More Kind Messages of Support

I'm in the Bat Cave, with Barney asleep on the couch to my left, and Mana asleep (on his back, with his legs in the air) on the couch behind me.

Marjorie and I watched the BBC documentary last night about the problems that affect some pedigreed dogs because of "debilitating inbred problems." Some of the journalism was quite florid, as we've come to expect from the BBC, but they made some good points --- with very dramatic, heartbreaking footage. It put our problems with Worcestershire Trading Standards into perspective.

Here are more snippets of messages we've received in the past few days from our customers:

Yes, I also got the questionnaire and rang the council on the pretext of being 'very worried', to see what I could find out. They told me that they had had a complaint telling them that dogs are kept in the 'stable block', when owners are told they're being kept in the kennels. I was quite vociferous in telling them that the 'stable block' is a very nicely converted kennel in which [our dog] had stayed and that any such complaint was nonsense. I'll also send you a copy of our reply to their questionnaire.

You must both be really upset - how awful. It's sour grapes. We'll see you next Wednesday when we bring [our dog] for his spa break.

Many thanks for the email and somewhat spooky timing; I got home yesterday to find the letter from Worcestershire Trading Standards and to say L[...] and I were shocked was an understatement.

We both thought that the questionnaire was somewhat strange and that in our experience we have found that you have provided a service above and beyond anything we could hope for, for [our dog].

I will send you a copy of the completed questionnaire as requested; and please rest assured that we will be returning to you soon and will continue to recommend you to our friends.

I hope everything is resolved with your neighbour as soon as possible.

I have nothing but praise for the service that Lucies Farm provided in the past. If I were to use a kennel in the future, I would use Lucies.

Sorry to hear about this, I'm sure the situation must be extremely stressful for you & Marjorie. My response has already been sent, but I can quote my comments:

"On the few occasions I have used Lucies Farm, I have always been extremely pleased with the level of care & interest that the owners have given my dog. I have never used any other kennels where my dog reacts so positively upon arrival and looks so healthy upon departure."

I hope this helps and I wish you both the best of luck in achieving a positive outcome to this unfortunate & unfair action.

So sorry to hear about your troubles with your neighbour. We haven't received a questionnaire, but if we do I can assure you that we'll answer with the most positive comments and send you a copy.

You only have to look at [our dog] when we arrive to pick her up after her stays with you that she has a great time, and that she is treated like a princess during her stays.

What a ridiculous situation, sorry for all your trouble, there's some pathetic people around unfortunately.

I did receive a survey but rest assure me, my dog and my family have never had any complaints about [my dog] staying with you guys, the photos convey the fun he has when he stays there.

I can complete the survey and send you a copy not a problem or if you would rather me not complete the form that's also fine.

I'll contact Marjorie today about [my dog] staying in a couple of weeks, I hope this matter settles down soon for you all.

I am concerned about councils and the like using powers, which were supposedly granted for fighting serious crime and terrorism, to prosecute fairly trivial complaints. I have no confidence that these people act responsibly, and I am quite concerned about them having my details. So if there is anything we can do please don't hesitate to get in touch. Do you recommend returning this questionnaire?

I think things are only going to get worse, see this link. I read an article by a security/cryptology expert, his name escapes me at the moment but I believe the article was in Scientific American, who recommended that you should routinely encrypt your emails just to frustrate government snooping. [I believe this is the article.]

When I first started using computers in the 60's everyone believed that they would lead to a great improvement in everybody's lives. How wrong could you be.

Just a quick one, apparently a questionnaire has been sent through - it has arrived today, I'll fill it in later and scan through a copy for you!

Well first and foremost in response to the email below [our dogs] have asked me to speak on their behalf.

[Dog 1] is severely disappointed that he was denied access to this cave - he wants to know if he had been a bad boy and was therefore being punished by not getting to play and explore -- he wants to know if it is like Cheddar or Wookey Hole or if it is a wondrous wet, dark, smelly hole filled with bats that he could terrorise -- either way if he doesn't get to go to the cave next time he will be most upset. He also suggests that if the humidity is acceptable in said cave and you are able to get sufficient light in there -- that you install a web cam in there -- oh and a cookie dispenser!

[Dog 2], however was glad that she didn't get to go to the cave as she thinks she might have got her paws wet -- which as you know is unacceptable to her!

Seriously though, we were both pretty incensed when we read what you have been putting up with from your neighbour. Just goes to show the amount of trouble one person can actually cause if they put their mind to it and the extraordinary lengths the council will go to -- presumably to keep that same woman off their backs and out of their offices!

The irony is that clearly she has never been near a run of the mill dog kennel where you can hear the barking from half a mile away! In fact the first time we left [our dogs] in your care we assumed that they must have been out for a walk when we came back to collect them as we couldn't hear any barking or wails of horror from our beloved pooches who had been left at the 'nice' kennel for the afternoon -- but then I suppose that may be because they hadn't been bought back from the cave yet, nothing to do with the fact that they were actually quiet, knackered from a long walk and happy!

The other thing that she won't have considered is that the majority of the owners that send their dogs to you for their holidays, will do so after checking the establishment for themselves, against other places available, will have done a trial run and will indeed check the web cams to ensure that their dogs are happy and well cared for.

I haven't received a questionnaire from the council, but would happily respond to it in the appropriate manner.

As a dog lover - like you guys, I understand that any 'complaint' made to the RSPCA (however unfounded) should be followed up, but what must this person have suggested was going on for them to send (and waste the time of) that level of resource, I can only imagine the level of stress this will have been causing you.

I think I recall correctly that there is more than one house near your property - strange that complaints haven't been received from anyone else!

I trust that you and the other neighbours will also be installing silencers on your lawn mowers, will be ensuring that children keep noise to a minimum, oh and you may want to have a word with the cattle and ask if they could keep the mooing down!

Whilst the best way to deal with a bully is to rise above it and not retaliate, so as to take the wind out of their sails, I do hope with the help of your solicitor something can be done to resolve this.

Anyway, keep your chins up.....

Further Updates from the Bat Cave

Marjorie and I continue to be encouraged by the many kind e-mail messages, copies of Worcestershire Trading Standards questionnaires, and telephone calls that we're receiving. I posted a small number of these yesterday here at the Doggie Blog, and if you'll indulge me, I'd like to post a few more.

We want you to know that you have our support 100 percent. We have a similar ongoing problem with our neighbour and have seen how some people can manipulate the system and the police. If there is any thing we can do, please don't hesitate to call on us. Wishing you all the very best with this nonsense!

If u've have got a secret cave somewhere I won t be happy because we've never been offered this facility, how big is it, and surely you could have squeezed a couple more dogs in when you've been full booked :)

You have 2 very happy customers filling in this questionnaire plus another 1 1/2 if you count our dogs. F [...] loves it there and T[...]'s a Saluki she doesn't do love. Good luck with this hassle.

I’m sure that you’ve had loads of messages already but I felt I had to reply – I have read your email and am still trying to pick my jaw up from the floor! I can’t believe what has happened! We haven’t had a letter from trading standards yet but can assure you that if one comes here the questionnaire will be completed to reflect the more than excellent standards of care and attention that I KNOW FOR CERTAIN that [our dog] has received from everyone at Lucies Farm. In fact I am very tempted to call them tomorrow to state this in case they miss me out!

[Our dog] is coming for a visit later this month so I’ll see you if you are there – otherwise, I hope that you are able to resolve this ridiculous ‘case’ soon.

Our immediate reaction to receiving the letter from the council this morning was:
  • whether this was a vexatious complaint from a neighbour and
  • why does the council want to know what you charge us? They can look it up on your site if they wish!
Catching up with your e-mail tonight filled in the pieces for us.

We were really upset on your part and echo your concerns at their accessing of confidential information without your permission or appropriate legal means. Suffice to say we shall be returning a glowing report to the council which we will fax through as requested.

We wish you both the best and are sure you will weather this unpleasant episode. If there is anything else we can do please let us know.

I was truly sorry to receive [your e-mail] and to see the trouble which you are having with your neighbour. I have not received any communication from the Trading Standards authority.

If you do indeed have a hidden cave, (which is of course impossible), I have to say that H[...] and S[...] absolutely love it. I cannot believe that dogs would return to you so happily if they were being ill-treated and mine are both very happy to return to Lucies Farm.

I am sure that a dispute with a neighbour is very wearing to you both, as I do see neighbour disputes in my professional life [...] and thus know the enormous aggravation which they cause. I am sure that you have received many messages of support, but felt that I wanted to add mine to them. I do hope that you don't let it all get to you too much.

My boys have just bought me Marjorie's book for my birthday so that I can try to improve the appetite of the picky eater that is H[...]. Needless to say, S[...] has no appetite problems!

If I can do anything at all to help you in any way with the problems you are facing, then do not hesitate to contact me. I am sure you will win through in the end and have no doubts whatsoever about the standard of care that my dogs receive when they stay with you.

If you'll indulge me, I will post snippets from more messages tomorrow. Even if nobody reads this blog, it makes me feel nice to re-read these. I guess it's the modern equivalent of pasting nice messages in a scrapbook.

Meanwhile, life continues at Lucies Farm. Marjorie has been hampered by the unpredictable --- but largely bad --- weather from taking lots of photos of our guests-in-residence. I am trying to clear the backlog of earlier photos --- with Photoshop on my laptop --- while semi-watching the Olympics. As an American who has lived in the UK since 1986, I am pleased by all the gold medals for both countries.

Our tree surgeon has just felled some trees in Lord's Wood, our private woodland, to widen out the area where we walk our guests. If it's not raining, I hope to see this tomorrow.

Greetings from the Bat Cave

In my earlier posting I provided details of our long running problems with our irascable neighbour, and the questionnaire that was sent to most (but not all) of our customers by Worcestershire Trading Standards. We promptly sent an e-mail to everyone who'd ever brought a dog to stay with us at Lucies Farm Ltd. telling them about this matter. Marjorie and I have been truly overwhelmed by the number of telephone calls and e-mail messages we've received from customers, expressing their incredulity and offering us their support and encouragement.

One customer sent us a copy of her questionnaire in which she advised Trading Standards, "I am horrified that you send these forms to Lucies' clients. You must surely be guilty of destroying a business with this crass, heavy footed behaviour." In her cover letter she said, "Enclosed is a copy of my reply to the puffed up little pricks in the council offices."

Another customer complained to the head of Trading Standards, John Dell. Mr. Dell replied on Friday,

"I understand your concern with regard to the receipt of the questionnaire and would like to assure you that there is no cause for you to cancel your custom at Lucies Farm. [emphasis added] We take data protection very seriously and your details will certainly not be divulged to any other party and will not be held by us indefinitely. [...] I am obviously not in a position to divulge information concerning this specific matter, however, the investigation of complaints are not permitted to escalate beyond the bounds of reason."

The Council's view of the "bounds of reason" are certainly different from our own.

According to a report we received from Paul Hine, the Animal Welfare Officer at Malvern Hills District Council:

I ran out of fingers and toes counting all of the people. Was it a dozen officials who prevented this from escalating "beyond the bounds of reason?"

As this matter grinds on and on, I thought it would be nice to publish extracts from some of the kind messages we've received. To protect our customers' confidentiality I have redacted their dogs' names, but otherwise these are their exact words --- each person's comments separated by the bat caves:

As for Lucies Farm itself I have to say that we have nothing but praise for the way our dog has been treated. Her reaction when the car turns into the lane or when she meets the staff cannot be faked. It is pure excitement and joy.

We first took our dog there as an incredibly nervous rescue dog with a particular aversion to young men and having little contact with other dogs (to the point where she had been expelled from a dog training class!). It was difficult to even get her out of the car and Marjorie spent a lot of time with her to make friends before we left. I was amazed when we picked her up and there she was playing with one of their young kennel hands and racing to and fro across the garden. Even more amazed when we took her back three months later and she greeted the same man as a long lost friend, happily snuggled up against Marjorie's leg and trotted off into the kennel. I suspect she remembered the scrambled egg breakfast!

[Our dog] is a tireless border collie with a fixation for playing ball. We visited other (licensed) kennels where the stay would have consisted of a stay in a wire pen with no privacy from other dogs and a 20 minute exercise on a concrete floor. On one occasion I arrived early to collect her and [our dog] was just returning from an obvious long walk was happily covered in mud. Marjorie was apologetic that they had not had time to give her a bath before returning her to us. How many other kennels would a) take dogs on long hikes and b) bother to bathe them?

Just look at the pictures on the web site and try to argue that this not a dog having the time of her life in a place she regards as a second home! As you will see - on one occasion they took her swimming in the pool. We didn't pay for that - they just thought that she might like the new experience. Obviously we can also check up on her via the web cam at any time and this provides additional confidence in her care.

Yes, the kennels are expensive - but I have every confidence that you do indeed get what you pay for - and indeed a lot more besides. When she first went it would have been impossible to leave her at a 'normal' kennel (too many other dogs, too noisy, not enough exercise). Someone would have got hurt. The therapeutic value of the skill and love of Craig and Marjorie for the dogs cannot be over-stated.

Far from pursuing a complaint against Lucies Farm I think it might be more appropriate to promote it as a model of canine care. I know it already has an international reputation, quoted as a case study in kennel manuals. Both we, and [our dog], would be extremely upset if this complaint affected their business in anyway. In all honesty there is nowhere else locally that we could take our dog.

I read your email with disbelief. It must be awful having to live next to a nasty neighbour and I feel for you. The officials in your woeful tale certainly seem to have acted beyond their remit and I can completely understand why you are taking action against them. I am in the US until October so know nothing about the questionnaire. However, as the owner of two dogs who have enjoyed your hospitality on several occasions, I can attest to the high standards of care you provide. I watch my dogs on the web cam and can see that they are well looked after and as happy as any dog can be when away from their owner.

The best pet accommodation we have ever come across.

We have just returned back from 3 days in rainy old France to find your e-mail!!!! Well, what can we say, other than the fact we are completely disgusted and horrified as to how far this communist country takes things and also to let you know that I know a great psychiatrist because your barmy neighbour obviously needs one!!

Just in case by the way, if this e-mail is being scanned by the so called do gooders of this country who do not have the know it all to sort out real criminals so therefore pick on innocent hard working, TAX PAYING people as yourselves, the reason we did not put [our dogs] into the kennel with you is because as we live in Norfolk and were only going away for 3 days and it would have been pointless driving all the way down to your house to put them in with you! Plus the fact, as you are such BRILLIANT KENNELS you are always full anyway!!

I would also like to point out that I am one of these sad women who does not have any children and therefore my dogs are my babies. I am VERY VERY FUSSY as to where we board them if we go away, and therefore when we were [away] we were SO happy that the 3 of them were with you and we did not worry about them at all as we could log on each night to see them in their kennel if we so desired. The idea that you have a hidden cave is hilarious! Do the council not realise how distressed dogs become very quickly if placed into areas like this!

You are at the end of the day looking after people's dogs in a fantastic manner, where the animals are very content and VERY SPOILT. (Please show them the photos of our 3 very very happy dogs!)

You are not dealing in contraband, drugs, illegal immigrants or arms, perhaps if you were you would be treated more favourably! This country has gone mad!!! If I was you, like the majority of sensible hardworking honest tax paying people I would move out of the UK ASAP and move to a country where you fine skills are appreciated. I can tell you honestly that we are looking to do the same.

We are both so very sorry that you have had to go through, and are still going through, such a horrendous, stressful ordeal and if we can be of any help please do not hesitate in contacting us, or my sister who recommended you to us.

We have not been contacted by the authorities as yet but we would be very grateful if you could pass on our e-mail to them as such. Please give them our phone number as well as we would be delighted to tell them what a great place you have. Good luck with you fight, hold your heads up high because you'll be fine and any judge etc will see that!

I too am shocked and angered at the current events and I cannot believe what you are being put through, its an absolute disgrace.

I would WELCOME a survey from the Worcester Trading Standards because I would tell them EXACTLY what I think of them! I know there are 2 sides to every story but I can only go by what I know, and [our dog] came home safe and sound from his visit with you and you even had him in your kitchen when making cookies, which he LOVED.

When [our dog] went to our nearest kennels at Heathrow Airport, he came back with a dirty bottom and bedding. He had to take him straight to the vets where he was put on a drip for a day. He had dehydration and diarrhea. However when we researched other kennels and found you, there was no question we felt that you would take great care of him and you did. We actually had a holiday and did not worry or fret, you have no idea what a relief that is.

Don't hesitate to let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

I can't tell you how [we] were horrified by your recent email, as i am typing this email my blood is boiling! What is the matter with this women and for the council well - I am so pleased you are taking legal action! We haven't as yet received any correspondence from your local or district council, if and when we do the first thing I will be asking them, is how they got our personal info!! We don't often need to put [our dog] in kennels but if we do it is always with yourselves, as we know she is in very safe and kind hands - I wouldn't trust anyone else to look after her. We think Lucies Farm is brilliant and you and Marjorie do a fantastic job.

I will be more than happy to reply to the trading standards should I receive a letter from them.

I believe that you can only speak as you find and as [my dog] cannot speak for himself (at least not in words!) out of the four other kennels we have used (3 previously and 1 since we discovered Lucies - you were unable to accommodate him because it was last minute,my fault.) he has only ever come happy from Lucies, the demeanour of an animal that cannot talk speaks volumes.

Marjorie said to me when [my dog] first stayed in you resort that he would not miss us but would be pleased to see us on our return, this was absolutely right,my dog had enjoyed his holiday as much as we had therefore I will continue to offer my business and support to you all at Lucies.

We have every sympathy with you.

[Our dog] was perfectly happy and well looked after when she stayed with you. We spent a great deal of time looking round various boarding kennels and felt we had found the right place to put our much loved pet.

To date have not received any questionnaire but will let you know if we do.

I've got a nasty feeling the worlds gone mad and there ain't a lot of us sane ones around!

PS We did two laps of the road leading to your property on the first visit as we missed the sign. There was certainly no barking or noise to lead us to you.

I was very impressed by the service you gave me and my dogs. I was able to look at them everyday on the web cam which was fantastic. I really can't understand why anyone would not be happy with the kennels, and Marjorie is obviously a huge dog lover and took wonderful care of my two, often naughty, dogs.

The only reason I haven't used you since is I simply can't afford it. However I would say that the service offered is good value for money-you get what you pay for.

I hope this is matter is swiftly resolved for you.

Lucies Farm and The Police State

On 13 August 2008 we sent an e-mail to every customer whose dog had ever stayed at the Lucies Farm Luxury Dog Hotel. We have been overwhelmed, and truly touched, by the outpouring of support from our customers. I will, in the course of the next few days, compile extracts from some of the wonderful e-mail messages we received, as well as some of the comments sent back to the folks at the Worcestershire County Council.

Our 13 August 2008 e-mail follows:

Lucies Farm Dog Resort & The Police State
Questionnaire from Worcestershire Trading Standards

Dear Customer ---

We don't routinely send out "mass" e-mail messages, so I hope you will excuse us for doing so today. We understand that many of our customers have received a letter and questionnaire today from the Worcestershire Trading Standards Department. As one customer e-mailed me a little while ago, "I won't lie to you I'm as curious as hell, are you allowed to divulge info?" So to satisfy his curiosity, and yours, here are the details:

What It's Like To Live Next to the Neighbour from Hell
Marjorie Tells Me "A Bully Is Never Satisfied"

We have a neighbour who has never been fond of dogs. She's lived here since 1986, and we since 1989. It's one of those awkward situations where we also own the land virtually up to her front door. To give you an idea of her proximity to our house, there's an aerial photograph on our website.

Hers is the house in the lower right-hand corner of the photograph. We own the track coming off the road, so you can see how it runs right by her front door and kitchen window.

This track is also a public footpath, and we've made it easier for dog walkers by installing a "kissing gate" at the top of the track (not shown in this photo --- it would be above the upper left-hand corner). The dog walkers --- from the housing estate across the street, and our own colleagues --- unfortunately drive her crazy. The photo also doesn't show that her house has no land on the other side (west). But that's the way it was when she bought the property --- so I see little point in her complaining about the situation.

She's contrived a notion that when dogs arrive we show their owner a "nice" kennel, and then take the dogs into a secret cave somewhere where they spend the rest of their stay. We have had, over the years, repeated visits by Council officials, and have always cooperated with them. We have, on many occasions, walked with the officials all over the farm --- letting them search for the hidden cave.

I have pointed out, of course, that we have 24/7 webcams where owners can (and do) watch their dogs. And we take numerous photos of the dogs during their visits, and post them in our online photo gallery (www.bark.ch and, more recently, www.hmdp.net).

We have offered to install Class 1 noise monitoring equipment and give the Council 24/7 access to it via the internet. The Council said this wasn't necessary: they installed noise monitoring equipment in our neighbour's home for three weeks, and there wasn't a single instance where we breached the rules. We have provided the Council with the passwords for our webcams, and have also given them access to our online booking system where they can monitor reservations in real-time.

In early January 2008, on one of the rare days when Marjorie and I weren't on the farm (we were returning a couple of dogs to their home in Bath), the District and County councils raided our property --- I understand 15 of them arrived. RSPCA vets, DEFRA vets, and even computer forensic experts. We have obtained a copy of the video that they made --- you can hear them laughing and having a grand time in the background. They found nothing untoward.

But they did exceed the scope of their authority by entering our home. We have obtained leading counsel's opinion that the two Councils trespassed by coming into our house. Our dwelling is on a separate piece of land, owned by Marjorie and me personally. And we do not have "farm offices" in the house. We understand that they took a copies of our hard drives, including the server, and that would have given them access to our Sage accounting system --- and, hence, your name and address.

I can assure you that we are fully registered under the Data Protection Act, and would not have provided your confidential information to them unless compelled to do so.

Our legal insurers, Chubb Masterpiece, have confirmed that the trespass into our dwelling is a covered event, and we are about to file suit against the Worcestershire County Council and Malvern Hills District Council for trespass --- and the return of our data.

Other than a single customer (who paid us with a Stg 1,400 cheque that bounced) we have not had any complaints from people who do business with us. In the case of the customer with the bounced cheque, we had no choice but to sue them in the Small Claims Court. They hired a solicitor and barrister, but the judge found entirely in our favour --- and awarded us our Stg 1,400 plus all costs.

Having to Call The Police
I'd Rather The Police Concentrated on Real Crimes

On the advice of our solicitor, Richard Slade at Bracher Rawlins in London, we have now started to call the police when we have our neighbour yelling at us. I feel bad taking up police time on such trivial matters, but you can imagine the distress her actions have caused Marjorie and me.

I was recently having a meeting with the Chief Surveyor of Central Networks (the electric distribution company in our area) on our property and she came out and interrupted it, and started shouting at me about an oak tree in our front garden. I came into the house, trembling.

I understand that the police have had stern words with her, and we are considering a civil action to obtain a restraining order against her.

If you do respond to the Trading Standards questionnaire, it would be very helpful to us if you would consider sending us a copy of your reply. It can be scanned and send to us by e-mail, or faxed to us at 01905-676-790, or sent to us by snail mail to our address on the left.

One of our customers called me a little while ago to say, "What business is it of the Council how much I pay to have my dogs stay with you?" I guess I don't know how to answer that question, except to say that we seem to be moving each day towards the East German model of government, complete with our own version of the Stasi.

We hope that you have been pleased with our service. If you have any concerns that were not addressed by this message, please don't hesitate to call either Marjorie or me at 01905-830-380 and we will do all that we can to be of assistance.

As an American, but one who has lived in the UK for 22 years, I can't begin to say how disappointed I am by the actions of the government in this matter. Marjorie, our colleagues, and I pride ourselves in running what we believe to be the best dog resort in the country --- second to none. You would think that the Council could find a better use for rate payers' limited funds. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Thanks for listening, and for your understanding.
